Every police officer in the United Kingdom is issued with a warrant number at their date of joining. This warrant number remains with them throughout their career but is completely seperate from their shoulder number ("PC 123") which is visible on their shoulder epaulette up to and including the rank of sergeant.
Larger forces such as the Metropolitan Police assign divisional shoulder numbers to officers, so for example there may be a "PC 123 BC" as well as a "PC 123 DR".
