Curriculum Vitae (CV) Writing

The benefits of being able to write and produce a comprehensive CV cannot be over-stated. You can be as good or better than the next person applying for the same position, but if your CV is poor then so are your chances of success.

The idea of the CV is to let prospective employers know all about you, that is the parts of your life and experience that are relevant to them. Here lies the secret, you must not allow yourself to be carried away entering matters that are not relevant to the position you are applying for. In fact, the shorter CV that comes directly to the point is far more likely to be read by the employer than the one that goes into pages and pages.

The current thinking is that on average, a CV should not exceed two pages in length and should be laid out in a neat, tidy and chronological manner. There are several different formats to work from and the most useful thing you can do is to borrow or buy an up to date book on the subject.

Many Force resettlement courses include useful sessions on CV writing. There are of course specialist agencies that will write your CV for you, a costed service, but perhaps worth considering given the fact that you might be talking about finding employment for the rest of your life.

Make sure yours is a good one, you know it makes sense.
