Re-settlement Courses

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have recently joined this forum and I have a general question about re-settlement courses within Forces in England & Wales.

I retired in 2004 after 30 years service and attended a 2 day re-settlement course 3 years before I was due to retire. This was not compulsory but I was allowed to do it in duty time so I was a fool not to participate.

I remember the first day quite well as it sadly co-incided with the Twin Towers atrocity.

Overall the 2 days were quite useful particularly in relation to financial matters and there was the usual NARPO speech from the local Chair.

I have moved on but I am very interested to establish whether individual forces place any more emphasis on re-settlement of staff than they did 10 years ago?

I know I will not receive responses relating to each force but it may give me some idea as to what is currently on offer and whether members feel the input they received was sufficient.

Thank you for your time.

The Met still offer a 2 day course but I don't think they use the phrase 're-settlement' any more. I know a few people who have attended and they seem positive about it. Main subject matter is finance, employment/self-employment and writing CV's as I understand it.

My old force had the general Re-settlement courses, also have a mid-service course for officers with 15-20 years in. They are based around finances with an IFA firm coming in and touting for business. Everyone agrees that the re-settlement one is too late to improve things and the mid-term one is the one to act on but not many go on the earlier course.

With A19 the force did put on a series of days and half days for officers to discuss with specialists things like writing CVs, job applications, interviews, self employment, setting up your own business etc. much more practical skills needed than provided on the pre-retirement one.

My old force do one day pre- retirement course, it was always fully booked, with lots of financial advice etc etc.  A day well spent.
