  9. Dear Forum Members, Police Oracle are looking at sending out a Christmas good wishes message to as many police officers in England and Wales this year and are looking at ways we could do this. This may take the form of an envelope with a greetings message and possible 'presents' inside. One of the possible way of getting this distributed is through the forum members. The idea we are considering is putting an envelope in the correspondence tray of each of the officers who work at police stations. This is where you come in.... If you were willing and able to assist, we would send a single package of enough envelopes to you for each officer at your station. We would then ask that you pop one of these (unnamed) envelopes into each officers' post trays. Should we take you up on your offer, we will send you a little thank you from PatrolStore. If you can assist with the above, please can you drop an e-mail with your details, including station and the approximate number of police officers based at your station. Please email James Deller: jamesd@policeoracle.com

  11. Top prizes up for grabs for those who correctly guess who the next head of the MPS will be... With the hunt now on to find a new Met Commissioner as the Force faces a period of unprecedented challenge, there has been significant interest in the likely contenders. The post has been widely advertised and, as the August 12 deadline for applications looms closer, speculation is mounting at who has thrown their hat into the ring. While the Home Office is keeping a tight-lipped silence on who has applied, current odds from bookies William Hill place ACPO President Sir Hugh Orde as favourite – running just ahead of TVP Chief Sara Thornton. A clutch of other senior officers are also attracting favourable odds, including the current Acting Commissioner Tim Godwin, HMI Bernard Hogan-Howe, who has temporarily assumed the responsibilities of Deputy Commissioner and CC Peter Fahy, who has won respect for his leadership of GMP. Police Oracle has teamed up with equipment supplier Patrol Store to offer a bundle of prizes in return for your favourite to become the next Commissioner. Prizes up for grabs include an Op Zulu belt system plus a torch bundle for our winner. Second prize is a torch bundle while five runners up will receive water bottles. Winners will be drawn after the successful candidate is announced. Those who predict the outcome correctly will be placed into a hat and drawn at random. Email your entry along with your name and full postal address to Katieh@policeoracle.com Closing date for entries Friday 12th August.PO_Katie2011-08-02 14:42:13
  12. The hunt for gunman Raoul Moat is told in an extraordinary new book by Northumbria officer PC David Rathband. Review by James Deller I did not know what to expect when I picked up Tango 190 as I thought I knew something about the events surrounding hunt for Raoul Moat. What the book told me is the extraordinary human side of PC David Rathband’s story in his own words. The officer talks and behaves like many of his contemporaries in the Service in the book and some of the phrases he uses resonate from my own experiences on the beat. The professionalism and dignity of PC Rathband is constantly apparent, particularly when he showed the determination update his colleagues on the radio after he was shot. The book highlights two families – the one PC Rathband lives with and the one he works with. He is most definitely a family man in both respects. He speaks of his affection for both and their affection for him is plain to see. Without doubt, he is an inspirational man, not only in how he conducted himself as a police officer, but as a husband, father and a role model since. His determination and drive is also evident, as is his desire to make a difference to the lives of others. Tango 190 is highly recommended. Police Oracle has five copies to give away. To stand a chance of winning, tell us the name of the Chief Constable of Northumbria Police. Email your answer along with your full name and postal address to katieh@policeoracle.com Winners will alerted by email. Closing date Friday 5th August 2011 PO_Katie2011-07-21 09:56:43

A world champion boxer during the 1930s, Max Schmeling became an unwitting yet potent symbol of German strength and superiority. But due to his personal relationships and outspoken views he soon lost favour with those in control and was forced to throw off his gloves and put on a Nazi uniform. Now, mired in the death and destruction of the Second World War, he would not only have to fight the enemy but also battle within as he struggled to maintain his dignity in a world fraught with peril. Fearless, uncompromising and forthright to the last, Max Schmeling seized destiny in his own hands and proved himself to be one of World War II’s most surprising yet glorious heroes.
