  1. Prohibition Notice

    As others have said, as your brake lights do not operate it is dangerous to allow the car to be driven. The prohibition notice (PG9) generally prohibits the vehicle from being driven at any time on a road, though the issuing officer can add notes to permit the driving, if certain conditions are met. As we cannot see what you have been issued, or what notes the officer has made, we can only assume that it is an immediate prohibition, with no exemption. In this case the car MUST either be uplifted on a trailer, or towed from the place you were stopped. If being towed it must be a rigid tow bar and not a rope, as a rigid tow bar makes your vehicle a trailer, where if it was towed on a rope it is classed as a separate vehicle and is therefore still being driven. Once repaired the vehicle must be taken for a new MOT and once you have this, you must take the prohibition notice AND the MOT certificate to a Police Station, where a 'removal of prohibition' (PG10) will be issued. Only once you have the PG10, can you legally drive the vehicle on a road.
  2. Moped tyres

    I can't think of anything preventing the use of a tubed tyre on one axle and tubeless on the other. You mustn't mix tyres of different tyre construction, for example one having a cross ply tyre and the other having a radial ply tyre. If the tyre has 'tube type' on the side, it MUST be fitted with an inner tube, if it says 'tubeless' there is nothing to prevent you fitting a tube inside it and if it says neither 'tube type' or 'tubeless' it MUST have a tube. The actual tyre tread pattern does not have to match front and rear. One thing you must bear in mind is that a tyre with an inner tube behaves very differently when punctured, to one which is tubeless. A punctured tubeless tyre will generally lose air slowly, whereas a punctured tubed tyre will lose air rapidly. The latter can lead to a greater or more rapid loss of control. I would search for an appropriate tubeless tyre personally.
  3. Floor lights

    I can't think of any legislation preventing the use of interior floor lights. As long as they are not so bright as to distract the driver and don't show red light to the front or white light to the rear of the vehicle. My car has factory fitted, selectable colour, ambient lighting including lights under the seats, footwells and door bins, though they are quite discreet.

    As an ex-mod here, I look in from time to time, but barely contribute. Under the old regime, perhaps some topics were locked unnecessarily in the eyes of some, but regular contributors tended to understand and accept why this had been done, perhaps after a little explanation by PM. Latterly in my time, changes made by the administrators, appeared to be made for change's sake, which is what caused me to jack it in. I came on here last week and was shocked at how the forum has changed AGAIN and all the old moderators appear to have disappeared. The forum used to thrive and now there's not a lot to get involved in. Perhaps the age of the forum has passed.

    I find it amazing that Police Officers on here are criticising other professionals for doing all they can in their power to make the Government think about what they are doing to those professionals. If the Police had more clout than they currently do and had the option to strike, I'm pretty sure that many of us would have when the Government rode roughshod over us in respect of the changes to public sector pensions. Whilst I would hate for someone to die as a direct result of industrial action, I think the Government's treatment of junior Doctors is absolutely disgusting. It's all very well and good pointing the finger at the Doctors if something goes wrong, but that finger should be pointed fairly and squarely at the Government.

    In Scotland, about 4 years is the norm before any form of specialism is considered. I had 11 years before I went to Traffic and I'm glad I did as I think you need to gain a lot of life experience before going to something like traffic, so you can think with a level head and avoid red mist. I did 15 years in traffic and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was only when someone came in to mess about with the structure that I decided it was time to move on. Now in my final few months of service and looking back, traffic was the thing that always floated my boat. Should you go down that route now however, I don't think you would feel the rewards that I have, as it has now changed beyond all recognition. That being said, like joining the Police now, you accept the conditions that exist when you join, so I'm sure those choosing Traffic now will, like I did, think it's marvellous. Traffic motorcyclists generally have to work in cars first before they are ever considered for bikes, although I know of one who went straight to bikes after passing his driving course. That's one out of hundreds, so I would think it highly unlikely for that to happen. You will have to pass a general purpose response driving course before being considered for Traffic, then will have to pass an advanced driving course once transferred. We used to run intermediate courses which mimicked the advanced courses, but I believe they have stopped them now (I'll stand by to be corrected on that point). If you pass your advanced course, you may then be eligible to become and advanced driving instructor, or security escort driver, if that floats your boat. I was SED trained and found that to be very interesting, although it's not for everyone. SED gets you involved in VIP / Royal escort duties. Good luck if you choose to go down that route, but I hope you can be patient, as it won't happen quick.

    Mark, I know what you mean, but as ITYO has said, rewards can be measured in all different ways. Promotion these days is more and more geared to those who are good on paper, rather than being seen by their peers as good. Some people are good cops, some are good comrades and some are good on paper. It takes a special person to be good at all 3, although I'm sure we can all name some. Sadly the dice are loaded towards the good on paper ones as other attributes are very difficult to quantify. That's life I'm afraid. I dealt with a triple fatal accident a few years ago, involving foreign nationals. Everything myself and my colleague did in relation to that accident met with universal praise from senior officers, to families and religious representatives of the deceased, to the accused and her family. I felt hugely rewarded from that experience, although I didn't gain anything tangible.
  13. MAGIC HAT, Apologies if you felt offended at my suggestion that you were a Freeman on the land. It was your initial post, which didn't really 'give' anything and was in the style of Freemen that have been here before. I've had dealings with Freemen both here and professionally and the historical bill of rights features highly in their lives. Anyway, I haven't read this new proposed Bill of Rights, so I'll not comment further at this time.

    If you are prepared to work hard, you will be rewarded. There are people in the job, who will do their utmost to avoid a bit of hard graft and spend so much effort trying to work out imaginative ways of avoiding work, that if they spent half the effort actually doing it, things would get done, harmony on the shift would develop and everyone will manage to cope with their own share of the work. I've been a career PC. I've always pulled my weight, never been off sick unless I was sick and have never had a poor appraisal. I've been fortunate to have always been working in a role I've enjoyed. With the career average pension now in place, my choice to be a PC all my service, would not be the most beneficial these days, but being a gaffer is not for some folk. All in all, as others have said, try to enjoy what you do, stick to the rules and you won't go far wrong. Would I join now, knowing what I do ? No. Would I recommend that you don't join, knowing what I know ? No. You have to find your own way and make decisions based on your own experience. Good luck.
