Your Career | The next 28 Years
After satisfactory completion of your 2 year probationary period there are
many avenues in which you can go down.
Many choose to stay on their allocated division, as this is a diverse role, with
no two days being the same. They enjoy the idea that one moment they could be helping
someone find their way to the local leisure centre, the next rushing to the scene
of a traffic accident where there are persons reported to be injured
There is also the option of moving onto one of the many specialist departments
in the force that are a vital part of modern policing.
Specialist departments such as:
Dog Section
Community Team
Child Protection Investigation Unit (CPIU)
Tactical Firearms Unit (TFU)
Road Policing Department (RPD)
Criminal Investigations Department (CID)
These are just to name a few.
You could go on to be a specialist in areas such as Probationer training, helping
new recruits find their feet in their new role, a specialist in control of public order or being a trained
victim support officer dealing with the people affected by crime.
If you have the potential to rise quickly to Inspector level and higher, you may
be suited to the Accelerated Promotion Scheme. This course gives you the skills
to progress more quickly to the ranks of Sergeant and Inspector and beyond through
classroom training at the Police Staff College, Bramshill, and at work.
Staff associations will help and advise you throughout your career.
If you're ambitious, there's a Promotion ladder waiting to be climbed. Training is provided
to help you and a promotion policy exists that gives
everyone equal opportunities.
Police pay is reviewed every year and your local
force can give you the latest figures.
But whatever you think you could do and wherever you think you could go, you must
start on the beat. Just like every police officer in every force in the country.
