Policing has never been an easy occupation. As a police officer you will be expected to perform a number of physically demanding tasks on a daily basis, for this you will need to possess a certain level of fitness. This is what the new fitness test is designed to measure.

Endurance
This element involves running to and fro between 2 lines 15-metres apart to a series of audible beeps. This element involves running to & fro along a 15 metre track to a series of audible beeps. The beeps, during the course of the test get progressively faster. You will need to have reached each side of the track before the next beep sounds. This is very similar to the bleep test some of you may be familiar with.

Pass - Level 5.4 (Approx 3.5 mins) Bleep Test

Job Relation
Prolonged foot chases, foot patrol & use of force for long periods of time

Dynamic Strength
The dynamic strength exercise involves performing 5 seated chest presses and 5 seated back pulls on a piece of equipment called a "dyno". The average force of the 5 pushes/pulls will be your recorded score. During this element you will have the opportunity to perform 3 practice pull/pushes immediately followed by your 5 recorded attempts.

Dyno Machine Pass - Average force of:
Pull - 35kg
Push - 34kg

Job Relation
Apprehension of fighting/struggling suspects, moving/pushing objects.

Grip Strength
This element has now been removed from the fitness test after instructions from the Home Office.

Changes have been made to the Fitness Test which are effective from the 20th May 2003.

There are now three test elements, grip strength, dynamic strength and endurance fitness. Speed/agility is no longer tested and the endurance fitness level has been changed.

Home Office figures have shown that around 50% of all female applicants failed the test, making it descriminate against female applicants. In an attempt to increase the number of female officers in the police force the Home Office have decided that the elements that most female applicants had difficulties with should be adapted to make a fairer non-descriminate test.

As of September 2004 the grip test element has been removed from the fitness test following instructions from the Home Office.
